The sign for National Bank Financial is seen in Toronto’s financial district.Charla Jones/The Globe and Mail

National Bank of Canada's capital markets arm has hired a veteran investment banker from rival CIBC World Markets to beef up its client coverage team.

Dan Nowlan is heading to NBF, where he will be a vice-chair, according to someone familiar with the move. Mr. Nowlan was previously vice-chair at CIBC and has a long history on Bay Street, which included co-running equity capital markets at CIBC.

He also has experience in Ottawa. After a surprise departure from CIBC in 2013, he took the role of chief of staff to former finance minister Joe Oliver after a few months off. He re-joined CIBC as vice-chair after the Liberals won a majority government in October, 2015.

In a way, Mr. Nowlan already had a history with NBF. He previously worked at independent dealer First Marathon Inc., which National Bank acquired in 1999.

NBF realigned its investment banking leadership team in the past 18 months, making multiple changes that included parting ways with former head of equities and investment banking Greg Thompson. The group is now run by Yanick Blanchard.
